Outfits Inspired by Blake Lively/Serena van der Woodsen

*Ah I found this post saved in my drafts. I meant to publish it during back-to-school season but somehow never got around to it. So rather than let it go to waste, I'll just post it here. The outfits are definitely wearable for spring and even for winter if you live somewhere warm :)

If I were to name the perfect girl, I would name Serena van der Woosen without hesitation. Even though she's a fictional character, she epitomizes perfection. Beautiful. Kind. Polished. Smart. Even her name exudes glamor (who wouldn't want the name Serena van der Woodsen?).

In the TV series, Serena is played by leggy blonde bombshell Blake Lively. Now, I think Blake is by far one of the most beautiful actresses in the industry. Not only is she gorgeous, she also seems like a genuine person. Friendly, bubbly - and unlike her younger castmate Taylor Momsen - she actually seems like a decent role model.

I admit, usually I dislike super pretty people because I'm so jealous of them. Like Emma Watson (umm she gets Harry Potter, Burberry ads, and Brown University) and AnnaLynne McCord (who is gorgeous and dating Kellan Lutz from the Twilight series). However, Blake Lively is someone I can't even not like because she's just that perfect.

In an interview, Blake admitted that her real-life wardrobe much resembles her character's wardrobe in the show. I think I can safely say on behalf of 99% of girls that we would all die for Serena's clothes. But unfortunately, not all of us have moms who are Upper East Side social climbers and stepbrothers who own large portions of New York real estate. Below are some fall back-to-school looks inspired by Serena that won't put a hole in your wallet.

Rain, Rain Go Away

Autumn is to me like a frenemy: I can't decide whether I like it or not. On one hand, it gives me an excuse to break out those bronzed riding boots, don on chic scarves, and sip apple cider at an outdoor cafe. On the other hand, it's means unpredictable weather, piles of homework, and the impending arrival of winter.

In Chicago, fall is rainy season. Days are frequently gloomy and wet. But just because the sky is gray doesn't mean your mood has to be. In this bright little outfit, all eyes will be on you as you prance through the rain.

First, the citrus floral skirt captures the essence of leaves on the forest floor of a sunny October day. The bright turquoise tank adds a pop of color while the open navy cardigan makes the outfit more fall-appropriate. Since there's already plenty of color in the outfit, choose neutral accessories: nude bag and pumps are perfect. Contrast the nude pieces with a dark bangle adorned with metal studs to add some edge to the feminine outfit.

Finally, an umbrella is essential to keeping your hair mess-free and your outfit polished. Opt for a deep, clear one as opposed to the usual flat, colored ones that people carry. The deep cap offers more protection from the wind and rain while the clear material allows you to see and be seen.

Winter Lace

This outfit is targeted towards those late fall days when it almost feels like winter. First, knee-high boots are hot this fall and has been for the past few years. But rather than wearing these lovely gray suede ones bare-thighed or with tights, pair them with some lacy tights. It keeps the look cold-weather appropriate yet adds some sexiness to the otherwise conservative outfit.

In the picture, Blake is wearing dark wool shorts. However, I chose these lacy print ones to add some more girliness to the whole look. Same with the blazer - I opted for a fitted blazer rather than a woolen boyfriend blazer like the one seen on Blake, which is just a touch too masculine for my taste.

Finally, allow a neutral feminine tank to peak out from underneath the blazer and keep your neck warm with an infinity scarf. A dark blue or turquoise one works great with the maroon tights. Finish off the outfit with a studded messenger bag and you're good to go!

Street Chic

This outfit is perfect for running errands or on any other cool autumn day when you will be doing lots of walking. Plus, it's composed of staples that are incredibly versatile and work for many other outfits. What you need are a simple white tank, dark pencil jeans that aren't too skinny, military boots, a brown woolen scarf, and a fitted cargo jacket.

This look epitomizes effortlessness yet is still stylish at the same time. While I would usually recommend accessorizing with something bright to add a pop of color, I think keeping everything neutral works in this case because the pieces are all of varying hues - blacks, whites, greens, browns. Therefore keep things simple with a roomy brown bag.

This comfortable outfit is just an invitation to go out and get moving. I think it's perfect for exploring a new neighborhood in your college town, volunteering at a soup kitchen or animal shelter, or helping your club pass out fliers on the street.

Touch of Gold

This outfit is the perfect fall date-look (sorry Penn Badgley, had to cut you out to make room for the pieces). Imagine yourself taking a walk on a beautiful fall day with a boy-toy on your arm.

To recreate this outfit, pair a striped beige tank (which most college gals already own) with a gold sequined mini (a wardrobe staple as it can be toned down for a day look like this and is perfect for a night out). Throw on a lazy boyfriend blazer - preferably acid-washed rather than something too dark as the whole look is supposed to be very relaxed.

Since you've already got the "glam" in the outfit with the sequined mini, keep everything else simple. Neutral flip-flops, a chestnut tote, and a brown floral bangle adds the perfect touch. Now all you need is that cute boy on your arms (sorry, this one I can't help with!).

Attention Getter

Have you ever felt, well, invisible? Like cabs aren't stopping for you, or nobody seems to hold the door?

Well, this outfit will solve your problem. In the picture, Blake is clearly hailing a cab - and which cabbie can miss her? To recreate this outfit, the most important thing you need is color. I opted for a bright yellow cardigan rather than a cropped vest like Blake's to make the look more wearable (do a cropped vest wrong and you'll like like a stripper, and that's not the type of attention you want). To prevent the cardi from looking bulky but also to prevent too much cleavage from showing, wear a bralet in a nude shade - bralets are super versatile and can fix many wardrobe problems.

Choose a pair of high-waisted shorts to complement the cropped cardi. Opt for a pair of neutral school-girl loafers (you don't want too much color) to keep the look school-appropriate. Finally, an azure tote is a great complement to yellow. If you can't find a bag of this shade, a bright green one would look equally good.

Finally, don't forget your notebooks! You're guaranteed to be the best-dressed chick in class.

How To Wear Shorts in the Winter

I just returned from my study abroad trip recently (which is the reason for my lack of posts these past few months - sorry!) and I cannot believe how cold it is in Illinois! I pretty much have avoided going outside as much as possible and I have to sprint outside to take out the garbage and get the mail. As I unpacked my suitcase, I got really sad looking at my shorts from the summer.

So I was inspired to do a guide on how to wear shorts in the winter. Thanks to the fashionable girls in Beijing who made miniskirts and cutoffs work in the cold weather, here are some outfit ideas on how you can recycle your summer shorts.

How to Wear Shorts in Winter

This all-American look is perfect for wearing around campus in the cold weather. When looking for shorts to wear in the winter, you can never go wrong with tweed or wool shorts - preferably in a looser fit. They are much more weather-appropriate than denim or cotton shorts. Pair the shorts with a classic white button-up shirt, some warm cable knit wool tights, oxford clogs, plaid scarf, and a preppy navy jacket for a chic yet effortless look.

Throw in a cardigan if it's extra chilly outside - just make sure it's fitted so the outfit doesn't look frumpy. If you're afraid of slipping on ice, opt for a pair of regular oxfords instead of the heeled ones shown above.

How to Wear Shorts in Winter

This outfit may not be suited for going to class in the snow, but it's a great going-out look. Begin with a pair of formal black shorts and a ruffly blouse (any feminine blouse works for this outfit). Build on it with a fur vest - which is super trendy this winter (and of course, faux fur works just as well) - and sheer gray tights. Accessorize with some classy booties and a sequin clutch for some extra sparkle. You can even throw on a pair of chunky armwarmers (another winter must-have) for some extra warmth.

How to Wear Shorts in Winter

This look is perfect for the edgy, fashion-forward girl. I mentioned earlier that tweed and wool shorts work best for winter, but this outfit shows how your favorite pair of denim cutoffs from the summer can also be recycled for the cold weather. The essentials here are a lacy tank, a white vest, and a rocker-chic must-have - a fitted leather jacket.

To take the edginess to another level, accessorize with some liquid leggings, a fabulous fringe necklace (another huge trend this season), and an oversized studded hobo. Select your favorite pair of boots or booties - this military-inspired ankle bootie adds just a touch of color to the whole look.

How to Wear Shorts in Winter

Okay, so shorts are generally frowned upon in the workplace, but this outfit makes the whole shorts look work. Start with a pair of feminine tap shorts in chiffon or silk (these are also great materials for winter wear) and wear tights underneath in a basic color like gray or black. Then add a work-friendly blouse like the chic forest green one above. Top it all off with school-girl oxfords and a clean-cut blazer. A worn-in laptop bag is the perfect accessory.

*Note - If your boss or workplace is very strict about the dress code, this outfit might not work so well. Don't take the risk and stick to the basics. Keeping your job is more important than being fashionable.

How To: Wear White After Labor Day

Labor Day has come and gone and fall is just around the corner. You can even feel it in the air; the days are shorter, the temperature is cooler, and the sun has acquired a more bronzy hue.

I'm sure you've heard the saying "no white after Labor Day." It's unclear exactly where this "fashion advice" originated from, but there are two common explanations. One is that white reflects heat, so wearing white makes you cooler in the winter and therefore should be avoided. Another theory is that in the late 19th century, as more people were entering the middle class, they were given specific fashion rules to follow because they didn't know what they should wear. For more detailed explanations, check out this page.

Whatever the reason behind the saying is, "no white after Labor Day" is definitely a fashion rule that you should break. In fact, white is a simple, classic color that can be worn whether it's 90 degrees of 20 degrees. Below are some great celebrity-inspired fall/winter looks incorporating white.

Casual in White

how to wear white after labor day - jeans

White jeans are one of my favorite wardrobe staples. I'm a total jeans girl and while I've got my acid-wash and greys and dark-wash and blacks, white jeans take things to a whole other level. They work with pretty much any kind of top and can either look more casual or more formal than normal jeans depending on how you wear it. And they're perfect for a bright, fall look as exemplified by Cali beach-girl Audrina Patridge.

You should take time looking for a good pair of white jeans because it's a great wardrobe staple. While I love skinny jeans, I think white jeans comes best in boot-cut and pencil styles. I highly recommend Citizens of Humanity's jeans in Santorini wash, which comes in many different styles. Also, be sure to check your behind when trying on white jeans. You do not want a pair that shows your pantylines.

For an early-fall look that's perfect for right now, pair your white jeans with a loose tee. Go for a dark color like black, grey, blue, or purple; white or yellow would look too summery against the white jeans. Then accessorize with jewelry that plays on the color of the top. For example, Audrina's topaz ring and gem-studded bracelet draws on the same color as her tee.

For added chicness, go with a roomy white tote to keep the color palette of the outfit very simple. As for shoes, either flats or some sandals would work. Steer clear of flip-flops as that might look to sloppy/summery. Then, finish off with some fun nail polish like this beautiful baby pink shade from Chanel.

Black-and-White

how to wear white after labor day - top

This stylish black-and-white look inspired by Olivia Palermo is perfect for the chic city girl and is very autumn-appropriate. Start off with a long, fitted white tee and leather pants. For a more budget-friendly alternative, opt for liquid leggings (which can be found for under $20 online) or faux-leather pants. If you do get liquid leggings, get a sturdy, thick pair since this is one of the few exceptions where wearing leggings as pants does work.

Finish off the outfit with a crisp, fitted white blazer - no boyfriend blazers here! That would make your top half look too bulky. Also add some fun silver metallic sneakers - they're a great alternative to flats. A pair of boots that hits below the knee would also look great.

Finally, accessorize with a simple black tote. Olivia is pretty much always carrying one of her many Hermes Birkins, but that is waayyyyy out of most college students' budget. A similar style would be the Kate Spade Quinn tote, but any simple, black tote works with this outfit.

Winter Wonderland

how to wear white after labor day coat

This adorable look inspired by what Anne Hathaway wore in The Devil Wears Prada - one of my favorite movies and a fabulous source of fashion inspiration - is perfect for late fall. Before I saw this outfit, I was convinced that like white sundresses, all-white is an absolute no-no for any season other than summer. However, I was so inspired by this look: by incorporating various textures, this all-white ensemble works.

To look perfectly Parisian-chic like Hathaway does here, you need a great belted white coat. Make sure to go for just ever so slightly off-white, like a cream shade, because paper-white would look too harsh. It doesn't really matter what you wear underneath since the coat covers everything, but I would recommend a silky blouse tucked into a black pencil skirt.

A white newsboy hat adds to the whole Parisian look - I love Hathaway's cream tweed one but couldn't find one quite exactly like it (anyone know where it's from? - looks very Chanel-esque) and lacy gloves makes the ensemble ultra-feminine (don't count on them for keeping your hands warm, though!). Finally, finish off with some pastel booties - these light blue ones work great, but so would nude or baby pink.

What do you guys think? Would you wear white after Labor Day?

Fall 2010 Style: Inspired by Juicy Couture

Juicy Couture is one of my favorite brands. To me, it epitomizes a fashionable college girl who is preppy with a bit of glam. If you're unfamiliar with the brand, you might think that Juicy is nothing more than velour sweats and blinged-out terry handbags. However, Juicy is so much more than that. They offer a whole line of ready-to-wear clothing, from coats to jeans to shoes.

Unfortunately, Juicy's price range can be a bit high for the average college girl working to pay off her tuition loans. So below are some Juicy Couture-inspired fall looks recreated with pieces that are much more budget-friendly.

Pretty in Plaid

Fall Look 1

This outfit represents the ultimate preppy yet sophisticated college girl. I'm personally a huge fan of the prep-school look (especially on boys - Lacoste polo + khaki shorts + Sperry boatshoes = instant love), but it's not middle school anymore and preppy no longer means mini-skirt, pink polo, and pearls pocketed from your mother's jewelry collection. This sophisticated-preppy look is a much more grown-up take on old-school prep yet youthful at the same time. Plus, it's absolutely perfect for fall days while walking around an ivy-covered campus.

The building blocks of this outfit is a classic plaid mini-skirt (in flannel or wool, preferably dark-green-and-navy checkered or in a color combination like the one in the above outfit) and a trusty heather-gray long-sleeve shirt.

Next, you need a good pair of riding boots. Look for one with little to no heel and hits just below the knees. A dark hue like black or gunmetal works best for this outfit.

Accessorize with a square scarf that can be draped triangle-style across your neck. You can either go matchy-matchy with the skirt as in the original look by Juicy Couture or you can put a twist on it and wear a scarf of a contrasting pattern. Make sure the scarf is of neutral colors though as you can't wear too much color with plaid. Finally, throw on a pair of semi-sheer black tights if it's cold out or feel free to go sans-tights; either way works great with this outfit.

Rocker Ski Bunny
fall look 2

This look is all about contrast: you've got the feminine pink top against edgy riding boots, snowy fur jacket against jersey shorts. It's a very bold and high-fashion look that's perfect for a girl wanting to experiment with something new. Plus, the boots and jacket makes the shorts weather-appropriate for even late fall, and that's something shorts-lovers (like me) can all rejoice over!

Start with an oversized baby pink v-neck that can be tucked into shorts. If your budget allows, go for a silk one for some added luxe. Next, a pair of gunmetal shorts is a great complement to the pink top. Look for a simple, trouser-style one with metal detailing, which is a huge trend for fall and adds some rocker-chic to the overall feel.

The real "rocker" part of this outfit comes from the boots. I used the same boots here for this outfit as the preppy outfit, which just shows how versatile a simple pair of black riding boots can be. A brown or gray pair would also work here, although make sure to get flat ones. The wrong pair of heeled boots can easily make this outfit look trashy.

Last but most importantly is a white or creamy-beige fur jacket. Of course, if real fur is out of your budget or if you just don't feel comfortable wearing an animal, faux fur works just as well. Just make sure to invest time in looking for a good one as faux fur can sometimes look very cheap. This jacket from Lipsy is both affordable and adorable; it will keep you warm during the late autumn months and give you a cute ski-bunny look.

Sophisticated Perfection
fall look 3

This outfit strikes me as the perfect "meet-his-parents" look. After all, who wouldn't want a daughter-in-law who is classy, sophisticated, and fashionable? It's also perfect for wearing to class or for a chat with your professor as it's professional yet very wearable.

To recreate this outfit, start off with a silky floral tank in muted colors and skinny black pants. The pants can even be denim but steer away from leggings unless your top covers your behind (leggings as pants do not bode well with professors or boyfriend's parents). Add some studded flats for a look that is polished and chic.

With those three items, you've already got a look that stands on its own. Remember to look for a tank that's not too revealing. A tie-neck piece like the one above is perfect because it doesn't bare any cleavage yet is still sexy and feminine by accentuating your bare shoulders.

Finally, if it's chilly out, throw on a cropped leather jacket in cargo green, gray, or a color that complements the color of your top. Don't go for all-black as that may look too strong against the black pants.

Frat Party What-to-Wear Series: Western/Country/Cowboy Party

College is the time for frat parties. A time when it's okay to wear a skin-tight minidress and five-inch heels. A large proportion of frat parties are "themed", whether it be "80's Dance Party", "Blacklight", "CEOs and Office Hos", or "Catholic School".

In this post, I will present three outfits on what to wear to a frat-favorite theme: The Cowboy/Western/Country Party (AKA Hoedown).

During your school year, there will inevitably be such a themed party. Generally, guys arrive in wifebeaters while girls sport cropped plaid shirts, cutoff minis, and cowboy boots. These parties also involve plenty of hay, potentially even a few farm animals, country music (hello Taylor Swift!) and lots of kegs.

According to my experience, 60% of girls will show up in plaid shirts, maybe another 25% in white tanks, a few in sundresses, and the rest won't dress up for the theme at all. In my opinion, plaid shirts and white tanks are boring. So below are two much more unique outfit ideas and one traditional "country" look.

Southern Belle

country themed party - feminine

I'm a girly-girl, so this is definitely my personal favorite out of the three looks. The overall feel is very effortless and pretty with some boho chic mixed in. I absolutely adore breezy, mini-sundresses: they're so very flattering and incredibly versatile. This off-white crochet-trim piece is super cute and very affordable. It can be dressed down for a country themed party or dressed up for frolicking around town on a balmy summer night.

Playing on the earthy theme, I added stacked wooden bangles and a leaf pendant to the outfit along with a monarch butterfly headband - a perfect warm-weather headpiece. Instead of the traditional cowboy boots, I opted for a pair of heeled country-inspired booties. Since the dress is very feminine, the boots add a little bit of edge.

Finally, accessorize with a pink feathered clutch and electric blue nail-polish - a shade that will pop against the light-colored dress.

Classic

country party look - classic

This outfit here is the quintessential country-themed frat party look - the outfit that I mentioned is worn by probably 60% of the girls. Actually, I fashion-ized the look a little bit - a lot of girls actually wear the trashy version of this outfit, which consists of stomach-bearing tie-front plaid shirts that are generally sold as Halloween costumes. Although the top and bottom pieces here are pretty classic, what makes this particular outfit stand out are the accessories.

First, start with a plaid shirt, preferably in red-and-navy checkers or dark green-and-navy. Pair them with your favorite worn-in, faded denim cutoffs and some classic cowboy boots.

Now comes the tricks: rather than looking like hundred of other girls that night, don on a pair of eclectic earrings: these blue-green feathered drop earrings are definitely unique yet still goes with the overall look of the outfit. Play on the feathered theme with a black feathered clutch - an accessory that adds some edginess to this all-American look. Glittery blue nail-polish works great against the red shirt and stack on some silver and gun-metal studded bracelets for a tough, cowgirl vibe.

Edgy Cowgirl

country party look - trendy

This is by far the trendiest outfit choice of the three and is perfect for a girl who likes to stand out from the crowd. It builds off of the wifebeater-and-shorts look but transforms it to a whole new level fit for the runways. The cropped white top was a huge trend this summer and the fringed vest is a big hit for fall.

Start off with a basic white cropped short-sleeved shirt. If you don't own one, you can even create a DIY version by cutting up an old white shirt. Don't cut off too much if you're uncomfortable with revealing your stomach - even a little bit of cropping makes a huge difference. For some extra bonus, fray the ends of the shirt (look up "how to fray fabric" on instructions as to how to do this). Then add some worn-in, faded denim cutoffs, a wardrobe staple for all college girls.

Next up is a fringed vest. They are being sold at high end department stores this fall but can also be found at your local Forever21 and Target. Add some slouchy western boots - preferably with a short heel - for a fashion-forward vibe. Throw on a stack of mixed bangles - metal and gold works wonderfully - and finish off with coral-red nail polish and a contrasting clutch.

Which outfit is your favorite? What do you usually wear to country-themed frat parties?

What to Wear During Rush Week

The start of the school year also symbolizes the start to sorority recruitment. On campuses all over the nation, sororities are opening their doors to new members with lots of sisterly-bonding activities and mixers. For those of you who are interested in going Greek, here's a quick and easy sorority Rush Guide, and best of luck in getting into the house of your choice!

First, "rush" is a brief period - typically only a week and also known as "formal recruitment" - where potential sorority members ("rushees") visit various houses and get to know the members of each house. At some schools, rushees are required to visit every single house and attend all rush events while at other schools, rushees can choose whichever house(s) they are interested in and attend their events.

The first few days of rush are very casual. After signing up, you will be placed in a "rush group" with a few other rushees. You guys will visit the various houses - most of which will be holding casual parties with food and drinks (non-alcoholic). These are great opportunities to meet new sisters and get a sense of which sorority seems like a good fit for you.

As rush goes on, events get more and more formal. Expect cocktail parties, mixers with fraternities, and one-on-one interviews with active members of the houses. Don't fret though, these aren't like job interviews that you have to do a bunch of prepping for. They'll just consist of questions like "What are your interests?", "What are you studying?", etc. Also, these later rush events are oftentimes invite-only, so it's important to impress at the casual, early rush events so you can secure an invitation to the exclusive events later on.

Finally, rush ends with "bid day" where sororities give out "bids" - or invitations of membership - to girls that they would like in their house. Receiving a bid from a sorority is much like receiving a job offer - you've impressed your employer (in this case the sorority house) and now all the power is in your hands. You can decide which sorority you want to join if you receive multiple bids or you can decide not to join one at all if you realize that Greek life isn't right for you.

While the most important thing is to be yourself while rushing - don't be pressured into doing anything you're uncomfortable with or try to change yourself into what you think the sorority is looking for just to receive a bid - you will also be judged a lot based on your appearance and clothing. After all, put a couple of hundred girls together and you're bound to receive lots of up-and-down outfit glances and hear whispers of "Ugh look at that fake Chanel. So tacky" and screams of "Oh my gosh I love your dress."

Below are some outfit examples and tips on what to wear during the four days that you will typically spend with each sorority.

Day One

rush - day 1

As I mentioned earlier, the beginning of rush is generally very casual - unless you go to school at universities (particularly ones in the southern states) where Greek life has a huge presence on campus. Since you will be visiting different sorority houses, prepare to do plenty of walking. Therefore you want to dress comfortably - in particular, wear comfortable shoes that have been broken in. You want to focus on meeting the sisters in each house, not on how much that blister on your toe hurts.

Since the weather is still pretty balmy in much of the country during rush week, shorts and sandals are the way to go for the first day of rush. But rather than denim cutoffs, opt for a more fashionable look with white shorts (white is okay even if it's after labor day!). Then throw on a draped tee in a neutral color for a look that's sexy yet not too revealing.

As for shoes, you can't go wrong with a pair of simple sandals. These turquoise ones looks great with the white shorts and gray top. Gladiator sandals would also make a great choice here. I wouldn't recommend flip flops as they may come across as being too casual and leather flats are a bit too formal for day one.

As for accessories, simplicity is key. On this day, you will be shaking lots of hands, so try to stray away from big cocktail rings and dangly bracelets. This exquisite little shell pendant by Betsey Johnson makes the whole outfit pop and is a great conversation piece. You want to stand out from the crowd and be remembered, so along with having a great personality, this unique eye-catching piece might just help you with that.

The studded turquoise clutch plays on the color combination of the sandals and pendant. Finally, put on a pair of small, shiny earrings. Having something that glitters in the light will make you stand out more, but make sure it's small in order to not look tacky and over-the-top.

Day Two

rush - day 2

Day two of rush is a more formal affair although it's still not time to break out a cocktail dress. This day will typically involve some casual sit-down chats at various sorority houses.

Again, you want to look stylish and pretty yet not like you're trying too hard. I think a feminine top and dark, skinny jeans are the way to go. This day is a great time to wear flats since it's a little too early to wear heels yet also too formal for sandals.

I know some people advise against bringing handbags or clutches to rush events as you will be going from place to place and such things can become inconvenient. However, I think a girl's got to have a place to hold her chapstick, phone, and compact, so I've included a clutch in each of the outfits. Look for a clutch with a chain or wristlet - it makes them so much easier to carry.

Since you could end up sitting around in air conditioned houses for quite a while, wear a cardigan if you get cold easily. An icy, frigid hand is not fun to shake. However, if you're someone who gets nervous and sweats easily, then don't wear a cardigan as it can be a hassle to carry around.

As for accessories, headbands are the way to go. They're girly, polished, and chic. Since the top and cardigan here are already very feminine, I looked for metal detailing in the headband rather than floral ones which are very popular in the market today. Wear simple studs or no earrings at all since there's already lots of details going on in this look. Finally, since the arms are busy with the lace cardigan sleeves, I opted for a cocktail ring instead of bracelets. Just make sure to wear the ring on the hand not used for shaking hands.

Day Three

rush - day 3

Now comes the two "fancy" days of rushing. On day three, girls at each house will most likely all be wearing dresses, so you should too! But don't go all-out just yet - rush is not over and since the events get more formal as the days go on, save your fancy dresses for last.

The key for those last few days of rush week is to get that dressed-up look without being too fancy. Sundresses are a little too casual yet cocktail dresses are too formal. So I would recommend fitted or draped jersey dresses, colorful silk frocks, or a pretty floral-print piece. This chiffon-and-jersey mix dress from ASOS is just perfect: the black dress looks elegant and the floral accents makes the piece more lively and unique. Also, be careful about wearing an all-black dress as that can also look too formal. Sorority life is about sisterhood and having fun, so go for some bright colors.

As for shoes, it's also about hitting that perfect balance between formal and casual. I wouldn't recommend dressy pumps but I think clogs are just perfect. These buttery camel-hued ones from Steve Madden are comfortable to walk in and will make your legs look mile-long. Plus, clogs are super trendy this fall, so you should definitely pick up a pair. Other options that work well are wooden wedges, booties, or brown leather boots.

When it comes to accessorizing, keep things simple as usual. These silver hooped-leaf earrings lend a sophisticated touch to the youthful outfit and the white studded clutch is a great investment piece as it can go with pretty much any outfit.

Day Four

Day four of rush week is typically Pref Night, a very formal occasion where rushees are invited to learn the ritual aspects of sorority life. It involves ritualistic ceremonies and is usually your last chance to secure a bid before bid day. Therefore it's all the more important to dress to impress!

This is definitely the time to break out that cute little cocktail dress. Remember, cocktail dress, not gowns or prom dresses. While many girls show up in black cocktail dresses, I strongly encourage you readers to think outside of the box. Go for something jewel-toned or pastel, think emerald, amethyst, sapphire, or gold. Not only are these dresses super fun to wear, they'll also make you stand out from the rest of the rushees.

This two-toned silk-finish mini dress from Lipsy is absolutely gorgeous. It's sexy, chic, and not overly revealing. Play on the pastel color palette by pairing the dress with nude-pink pumps and amethyst feather earrings for the ephemeral feel of an angel. Make a bold statement with a dark feather-studded clutch and sky-blue nail polish.

Back-To-School-Series: What to Wear During Orientation Week

College is an exciting experience. It's about being on your own and trying new things. And when it comes to new things, sometimes we're at a loss as to what to do. When I began my freshmen year, I found myself wondering how to start a checking account, how to pick an insurance policy, etc.

With so much to learn and experience, it can all feel a little overwhelming. You might even be wondering, "What should I wear to my adviser meeting?" "How should I dress for my first frat party?"

Well, stress no more. Here is a comprehensive guide for what to wear for all the events that you'll encounter during your first week of college.

Move-In Day
Move In Day

From elementary school to high school, we all worried about what to wear on that August or September day when school starts. You want your crush to see that you look even hotter with a bronzed tan; you want your frenemy to see that you're with the new tangerine Kate Spade tote and cream Marc Jacobs flat.

In college, dressing to impress is even more essential. We all know that first impressions are important, and when it comes to college, you'll always be seeing people you've never met before, so you're constantly making first impressions.

First impressions begin on move-in day. These are qualities that make a successful first-day outfit:

Comfort - You'll be lugging suitcases up multiple stairs, so no mini skirts or high heels.

Chic - You want to come off immediately as someone who knows how to dress, so no frumpy tees or people will always think of you as someone who doesn't care about her own appearance.

Memorable - Your first day outfit should make you stand out from the crowd. Whether it be a an adorable bright tangerine handbag or just a unique combination of vintage pieces, you want people to notice you on your first day. It will go a long way in making friends during the rest of the year. Oh, and don't bust out the monogrammed designer bag - even if it is an authentic Louis Vuitton. You want to come off as stylish, not as a spoiled little princess.

First Night Out

First Night Out

Unless you've already shimmied your way up the social ladder and befriended upperclassmen and have apartment party invites lined up, chances are your first party will be a frat party. Frats love holding parties during freshmen move-in so they can prey on freshmen girls make you feel welcomed.

For your first party, make sure not to overdress. Frat parties are usually pretty casual, so don't break out the silk top or that cocktail dress. Most frats are also pretty gross and there's going to be drinks spilling all over the place, so avoid white and anything that you would cry over if you got spilled on. Since frat parties get really crowded and hot, you best bets are a feminine top and denim shorts, a casual dress, or a flirty skirt and tank.

Adviser Meeting

Advisor Meeting

College may be fun and all, but the core of college is the education that you will get. At most schools, you will be assigned an adviser who will guide you through the next four years of your academic life. Building a good relationship with your adviser is absolutely essential. Your adviser is the one who will be advising you what classes to take, making sure you meet the graduation requirements, informing you about internships and work opportunities, and writing you letters of recommendation.

While there's no reason to don on a pencil skirt and suit, you should still look professional when meeting with your adviser (and any professor in general). No shoes too high, skirt too short, or shirt too low. Also, show up to your appointment ten minutes early. Being late will not make a good impression.

And if your appointment is before noon, try not to go out the night before. You absolutely should not show up to your appointment hungover. No matter how studious you may be in real life, you adviser will immediately dismiss you as someone who doesn't care at all about school.

Going Downtown
Going Downtown

At many small colleges, each dorm holds group trips as a bonding experience. Usually these trips will take you to a nice restaurant or to the bustling downtown if you're in a big city.

These trips are a great way for you to meet more people and familiarize yourself with the surrounding area. It's important to wear comfortable shoes as you will probably be doing quite a bit of walking, but if you're going to the posh areas of town, you should also get slightly dressed up. Since move-in day, this is the best opportunity to showcase your style, so break out that billowy new dress you've been saving for fall and those adorable leather flats!

First Day of Class
First Day of Class

It's important to look your best on your first day of class because you never know which hottie might be in the same class as you. You want to look cute yet school-appropriate at the same time.

A stylish yet roomy messenger bag is a must. Backpacks tend to tangle up your hair if you wear your hair down. You can't go wrong with a mid-length skirt, preppy blouse, and flats. Hello miss smart and gorgeous.

Putting in tons of effort to look good for class everyday can get quite exhausting. But the good news is, after about two weeks, people stop switching/transferring classes, so you'll be with the same people. Even though I'm not advising you to do this, I must say it's okay to "slack" (aka just throw on something quick and skip the makeup) if you're going to a class where there are no cute guys (or girls who appreciate fashion).

Runway Under $100: Milly's Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear Collection

Milly Fall/Winter 2010

One of my favorite runway shows of this fall was Milly's ready-to-wear collection. Designer Michelle Smith - known for her classic silhouettes and feminine pieces - did not disappoint with her new line. Milly's fall 2010 RTW featured preppy crisp-cut blazers, blouse-and-miniskirt combos, and what I was most impressed by - patterned tights.

I've never personally mastered the tights-with-heels look, but Smith managed to do it so well. Even in out-of-the-ordinary fluorescent blue tights or splattered polka-dot print ones, the models still managed to look so classic.

Here is my guide for recreating some of Milly's signature fall looks - all with pieces under $100!

Look #1: Asymmetrical Dress & Tights

milly look 3

As much as I love these polka-dot tights, I don't think they're all that wearable unless you're railthin, 5'8 or above, and have very fair skin. Nevertheless, the overall look can still be very wearable. Pair a slim-fitting black asymmetrical dress with a pair of sheer black tights - black ones are much more flattering than patterned tights.

I opted for a pair of more dramatic heels than the ones in Milly's collection because the dress is more subdued (I could not for the life of me find a black and gold-printed dress like this Milly piece!). So I chose gold nail polish instead.

Finish off the look with a stylish black beret, a base piece featured in many of Milly's looks for this season. Straighten your hair or wear it in a sleek side ponytail for a sophisticated Parisian look.

Look #2: Preppy Perfection
milly look 2

This is probably my favorite look from Milly's fall collection - it's so classic yet fashion forward at the same time. Plus, it's so wearable and perfect for fall. White tights is another one of those things that look good on really slender people, but hell, I'm willing to lose weight just for the sake of pulling off this look!

To recreate this outfit, start with a simple cream blouse in silk or chiffon. And the key word here is simple: nothing frilly, low-cut, or oversized (since it needs to be tucked into a skirt). Next, add a navy tweed mini-skirt and tuck the blouse underneath. Now, a good tweed mini can be hard to find. Look for a piece that's not too fuzzy, rides at the waist, hits slightly above mid-thigh, and is not too grandmother-ish (I know, that's a lot of requirements, but a good tweed skirt is an investment piece). Check out your local vintage store if you're having trouble finding one.

Next up is a classic, crisp blazer. A navy one with simple white lining works wonderfully with this look, whether collar or collarless. But if it does have a collar, make sure that it's angular and not rounded. Rounded collars would not create the same chic effect as collarless/square collared ones. Now comes the shoes, which could be anything from black strappy sandals to dark flats.

Finally, the right accessories are what makes this look. A pair of blue leather gloves add an eye-catching pop of color to the toned-down outfit and will keep your hands toasty in the late autumn, as will a chic beret. As in the previous outfit, style your hair in a sleek ponytail or straighten it.

Look #3: Blouse and Mini
milly look 1

This look again has the polka dot tights, and they're even harder to pull off than the patterned tights in Look #1 since these are primarily white. Nevertheless, I adore this look. The flimsy blouse looks so soft and the look is perfect for the workplace.

The base to this outfit is a flutter-sleeve cream blouse in a flowly fabric and a black, high-waisted mini. Follow up with either a black belt or as in the example outfit, the tie-bottom blouse can create the illusion of a belt. Follow up with printed tights - the ASOS ones in the center are more whimsical while the MetroPark USA ones on the left are more work-appropriate.

Since the whole outfit is pretty subdued, play it up with a pair of sky-high black pumps and a fun, chic headband.

What to you think of Milly's Fall RTW collection? Would you try any of these looks?

Day to Night: Tunic Top

As any college girl knows, it can get quite hectic maintaining a school/career life along with a social life. There's barely enough hours in the day to work that internships, finish your school work, sleep, and go out with friends, so the last thing you should have to fret about is what to wear.

I will be starting a series called Day to Night, in which I will feature an item - whether it be clothing, accessories, or makeup - that can easily be transformed from a day in the office to a night out at the clubs. In this article, the main topic is The Jersey Tunic.

I am a huge fan of tunics because they have the three essential qualities that I look for in a piece of clothing: style, versatility, and comfort. They look chic but effortless, they can be worn in the summer as dresses and in the winter with leggings, and come on, they're so much more comfortable than those skinny jeans. And jersey is a great material because it can be worn during day or night and doesn't tend to crease after a long day like cotton or silk.

Day to Night w/ Tunic

I bought this black jersey tunic from Bluefly a while ago and it has definitely served me well. I wore it to my internship last week with a pair of leggings and flats (my workplace is very casual, though this is something you could wear to work, unless you job requires business instead of business-casual).

Come 5 p.m., I get a text from a good friend from high school asking me to the mall. This outfit took me straight from the office to my shopping trip. After a couple of hours, we were headed to a good old house party. I didn't really have much time to change, so I ditched the leggings (it's been 90 degrees lately where I live), threw on my new Steve Madden Tobbi pumps (which I love so much that I will do a review soon), switched into some fun earrings, belted my tunic, and traded my bag for a cute clutch.

Easy breezy. After a five minute pit stop at my house, we were ready to go out for the night.

Pretty much any tunic can be paired with leggings, flats, a messenger bag for the day and pumps, a waist-cinching belt, and a clutch for a stylish going-out look. Just make sure that the tunic is either in a dark wash or slightly thicker material so it isn't see-through when you're going out sans-leggings.

Style Guide: Running Errands

Have you seen candid pics of celebrities out running errands yet looking totally fabulous? Think Katie Holms shopping with Suri on her arms, or Gwen Stephani walking her dogs.

Well, lately, I've found myself running a lot of errands. Since my parents are both busy with work, I've become the one who has to grocery shop for my family. I've also been selling my textbooks on Amazon, which requires frequent visits to the post office. Then there are the coffee dates and mall trips with the girls and evening jogs that I go on with the guys. On top of all that, I have a 9 to 5 internship five days a week, so I actually feel that I have less free time now that I had over the school year.

While I would love to just bum around in running shorts and a T-shirt all day, I can't bring myself to do that. In my small hometown, I'm always running into people I know. There have been times in the past when I'm at Walmart in sweats with no makeup, and later I get a text from someone I went to high school with, saying: "Hey I just saw you at Walmart!" At which point I think, "Great! And I looked like a total bum!"

So lately, I've made a new resolution for myself: even though I may not constantly have to avoid the paparazzi, I should still always make an effort to look good before leaving the house. Below are three looks inspired by the ever-chic Kristin Cavallari to cover all your everyday errands.

Shopping With the Girls

casual outfit 2

I absolutely love this look, the cropped top is so in this season and super casual. These dark denim shorts stand in contrast with the casual top and the heels give the easy breezy outfit an extra oomph. (P.S. why is it that Canadian Forever21 seems so much better than the one in the states? Both the top and shorts are from there). I opted for these cream Chanel-esque clogs rather than pumps like Kristin's just to make the look a little more practical for a normal college girl.

The tasseled bag is so stylish and white is a great summer color. Finish off the look with a coat of classic red nail polish - I used NARS polish in Hunger - throw on your favorite pair of sunnies and it's time to hit up Bloomies and Nordies!

Coffee Date

coffee outfit

This effortless yet fashion-forward look that Kristin wore to an outdoors concert is perfect for grabbing coffee with the girls or meeting up for lunch with some old friends. This outfit will show off your style without appearing like you're trying too hard. The denim cutoffs and sheer white tee are perfect for summer. Since the top is pretty thin, wear a cute bra and let it peak through. These cuffed sandals and wooden bracelets add a boho vibe that gives the outfit a more summery feel.

Since you're just meeting up with some friends, ditch the heavy purse and grab a cute wallet instead.

Grocery/Post Office Runs

casual outfit

This simple look can be worn for pretty much running any errand and definitely beats the baggy-tee-and-shorts look that most people wear when going about their daily business. An easy breezy white tank is always my summer go-to piece. Throw on a pair of faded skinny jeans and your favorite pair of flip-flops - I don't wear anything but Havaianas - to finish off the outfit.

Coral is one of the hottest colors this season. While the color can be overwhelming in large pieces, incorporate this summery shade by painting your nails with a coral nail polish (when it comes to nail polish, you can't go wrong with Essie). Finally, this camel leather handbag is such a wonderful color and a super-steal at just $25.
